Must Read Advice For Moms With Lower Back Pain After Exercising

If you are a mom struggling with lower back pain, it doesn't mean that you can’t stay active and look great. While your back problem might be preventing you from doing your regular workout routine, there are several ways to reduce the pain and become more active.

As well as being unable to enjoy your exercise, lower back pain makes it difficult to pick up and play with your children.

It makes it difficult to take care of your home, cook family meals and drive to the store.

It makes it difficult to sleep well at night and can mean you aren't able to enjoy a movie night with the family because your back starts getting really sore after an hour of sitting down.

But there are natural ways to reduce pain and get you back to lifting weights, running, playing sports, and being a happy, active woman.

Lift Weights, Run, And Exercise With Proper Form

When exercising or playing sports, you may be aggravating your lower back due to poor technique, muscular imbalances, or a bad training program that isn't right for you.

Make sure that when you are lifting weights you use good technique, and if you aren't sure, I can help with this as a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist.

Even if you don't lift weights, and you do bodyweight exercises, pilates or run, your technique during these activities is crucial.

By fixing your form, correcting imbalances, and following the right training program, you can ensure that you are getting stronger, fitter, and in great shape without dealing with agonizing lower back pain afterward.

Visit An Expert Performance Physical Therapist

Physical therapy is a proven, and natural way to reduce lower back pain and help you get back to being active quickly.

This is a massive reason people visit me - because they want an alternative to pharmaceuticals like painkillers which can have potentially harmful side effects.

As well as relieving pain, physical therapy helps you address the root cause of your lower back pain, which means that it doesn't come back!

Most healthcare professionals will only look at your back if you have back pain, but fail to identify issues with your hips or knees which could actually be the reason for your back pain.

Even if you've suffered for years, with back pain, I've seen incredibly fast results because my approach is focused on addressing your whole body - because often, pain in one area is caused, or at least made worse by other areas of the body.

Think Strengthening, Not Stretching

You may have seen videos on social media, showing stretches to relieve lower back pain and to warm up before exercising.

And they are great - IF that's what you need (and you do them right).

This is where the problem lies.

First of all, people often visit me and tell me that they've tried stretching (sometimes for months) and it's not helped, or only provided relief for an hour at a time.

This is usually because they are doing exercises that don't actually stretch the right muscles that are causing their pain, or they aren't doing them correctly.

The second problem is that in the vast majority of cases, people don't need to stretch more to relieve their lower back pain.

They actually need to strengthen muscles that are too weak.

So, if you've been doing lots of stretching, and have not found your lower back pain improving, the issue could be a muscular weakness.

And stretching won't fix this.

Take Care Of Your Body

This may sound simple, but as a busy mom who is balancing work, family life, social life, and keeping fit, it can be really easy to forget to drink enough water.

Dehydration can contribute to a sore, stiff back, so make sure you drink plenty throughout the day, and more on days you are exercising.

A lack of sleep can also be common for people I work with - with disturbed sleep due to young children, or a combination of late nights and early mornings meaning you aren't allowing your body enough time to recover between exercise sessions.
